No results yet from the blood tests or the X-ray. I did call the doctor’s surgery on Friday on the off chance 5 days meant 5 days, but I guess they meant 6!
I tried to ignore the wait for the results and try and train this week. A very easy turbo on Monday evening and Wednesday evening and a swim on Tuesday and a review on Thursday.
Monday’s turbo was OK, but I had to work late Tuesday so I missed the swim session. I did the easy turbo Wednesday and agreed to do the missed swim set on Thursday instead. But again I had to work late Thursday and didn’t get in from work until after 9pm. So I missed the swim set entirely this week.
A rest day Friday. Then was at work all day Saturday and at my brothers 30th Birthday party last night. So a bit of a hangover today!
I am sitting watching the football as I type trying to decide whether to go and do a turbo or go for a swim or just sack this week off.
For me it is all about getting the test results (and hopefully the all clear) and then next week and the next 22 weeks. Then I can finally get this year off to a proper start. Next week is a nightmare in the shaping too as I am out at work events Tuesday and Thursday evening. But I HAVE to start training or I am not going to be ready for Austria.
I need to get some solid training under my belt for all of February, then look for some events in March. The Ball Buster is out of the question I think being on the 1st March. But there are a couple of cycling sportives I could do and a half marathon if Mark thinks they are a good idea. April I then have a two week break in Egypt which will be a full on boot camp.
All of the above assumes the test results are OK and the virus I had has cleared up. Fingers crossed.

This week has been another disaster.
I woke up Monday morning with a killer sore throat and that developed into another cold this week. I went to the doctors on Friday and she has referred me to get some blood tests and a chest X ray. Mainly just to confirm nothing is seriously wrong and it is just a lingering virus – that my body just won’t shake off.
On the positive side I feel a lot better today then I have done all week so hopefully this cold was a blip lingering over from last week.
I have had a couple of conversation with Mark this week regarding any other issues there could be but nothing concrete is there as an explanation pending the blood test results.
So going to the hospital Monday morning to get the blood tests done and the X-ray and should hear within 5 days. If I feel this good next week though I will probably do some light training as it is only 24 weeks to D-Day.

It seems I am still on the health roller coaster.
I felt a lot better this week. Another easy turbo Monday evening and a swim session on Tuesday. Was really good to get in the pool and knock out some lengths. It was an easy session and only circa 2K in distance, but it was good to start putting time in the training log next to Swim.
Wednesday it was good to see a structured session for the turbo – rather than another easy session. And I enjoyed it a lot. A bit of Zone 2 training, but after the session I felt a bit tired.
It was no surprise to wake up Thursday with a sore throat. Scheduled no training on Thursday as I was out in the evening with the wife and friends and the throat got worse through out the day. Friday was my scheduled rest day and meant an email conversation with Mark re what to do the weekend.
Saturday back to an easy turbo and today (Sunday) I did body conditioning at the gym. I felt good and with no real bad throat yesterday I followed up the body conditioning session with an easy 20 mins treadmill run. I am just so desperate to start building the base anything, even short and easy, should help.
I feel better today and I am hoping the sore throat in the week was just a blip. It’s been something like 3 weeks where I have felt good (100%) out of the past 12 weeks.
This week last year I did 8 hours training, this week I did 3 hours 45 minutes. The first 5 weeks of last year I did 38 hours training. If this carries on for the rest of January, I could be doing less than half of that this year.
Mark keeps saying don’t worry there’s plenty of time, but that’s an ‘easier said then done’ thing at the moment! It is very frustrating. It seems my first endurance training is controlling frustration of not being able to train as hard as I want.

My first blog of 2014. And it’s a potential ‘down in the dumps’ one.
I am just so keen to get cracking with the base build, for what will be (notice I haven’t added the ‘hopefully’ word) my biggest Triathlon year so far, and I still have this damn throat virus.
I am at about 95% of being well. Which is encouraging EXCEPT I have been at 95% for over a week now and wanted the Christmas break to get me to 100%.
I wake up with a sore throat, which goes after a cuppa and some breakfast, I generally feel a bit ‘under the weather’ during the day, but the sore throat comes back in the evening pre bed. I am also sleeping about 12 hours a night – which is 4 hours more than the usual 8 hours. At least I can still do math!
Today I went to a walk in clinic to see if I could get some antibiotics. I saw a real nice doctor who looked at my throat and convinced me I didn’t need antibiotics as it’s a virus and not a bacterial thing. And the clincher that antibiotics will actually reduce my immune system even further.
On a positive note I am doing some training, low effort and short distance/time, but it still counts (I hope). I am back on the calorie controlled diet (day 3) to loose the Xmas and Christmas build up weight that has gone on.
And I am reading a very interesting book called ‘The Chimp Paradox’ by Dr. Steve Peters the pyschiatrist behind many sporting successes including the Olympic GB Team. They say an Ironman is as much about mental strength as physical strength so when I can’t do much of one means I can work on the other. I won’t try and explain the book as I won’t do it justice. Give it a google.
Finally, for everyone’s joy, this year I am planning more blogs but of a shorter duration for 2014.
