Light at the end of the tunnel?

Hi folks

Again another long time since my last blog, but as this is a triathlon training blog and I haven’t been training or competing there has not been much to blog about!

The injury to my knee was a bit of a red herring. The diagnosis by Mark Saunders of Physio4life in Putney is that my back, Quads and core are all very very stiff and inflexible. There is a nerve called the femoral nerve which travels down your back, through your groin, down your quad and ends by splitting into 2 at your kneecap.

As my back and Quads are so stiff they are stopping the femoral nerve from moving and flexing etc and this is causing it to be restricted. This is bringing pain in my knee at the end of the nerve rather than in my back. But the issue is my back not my knee. Weird eh.

So I started with exercises to loosen my back up, but that was too much too soon and caused the back to get stiffer and spasm and ultimately hinder the nerve and make the knee pain worse. A week of less severe back exercises to the back and easier exercises on the nerve got us back to a good position. This week I had a sports massage on the stiff areas, and an adjustment and we redefined the back exercises for the forthcoming week.

I also have the go ahead to do a couple of short swims and do a short, easy cycle (20 – 30 mins) and see how it is. If OK a longer ride (30 – 40 mins) before my appointment next week. Then next week another sports massage to loosen the back and Quads up followed by another consult with Mark. He is hopeful that I will then be able to start running the week after and can do some proper swims and rides.

So light at the end of the tunnel. Nine weeks with a bad knee which was all to do with a stiff back!

In terms of targets it’s too early to set anything serious but small goals are good. There is a SRS events Cycle Sportive at the end of September and I would usually do the 90K ride and my wife would do the 40K ride. However, all going well I might do the 40K with ‘the wife’ at her pace, so I get a ride out at an easyish pace (no offence Sam). Might even drag Leigh along too and she can ride my other bike.

There is also a 10K run at my local park in November and I might try and go for a good 10K run (maybe go for a PB)?

Diet is going OK, the weights not falling off but little and often.

Hopefully more updates more often if I can start training again, especially as I have a new MacBook Air to play with!

Thanks for reading.

Darren
